"Knowledge Map" Connects a Research Community

At least 2 billion people worldwide suffer from over 600 brain disorders. Cohen Veterans Bioscience (CVB) wants to speed up discovery of diagnostics and therapeutics for veterans and civilians. Traditional research pipelines proceed as normal. But new approaches to data, collaboration, and “science at scale” are what’s needed to change the norm.

CVB organizes a network of public-private partners that each contribute data, technology, or expertise. CVB hired Exaptive to expose connections in the vast data sources available to them and to facilitate connections among the people involved in the PTSD/TBI research community.

Exaptive built interactive knowledge maps for CVB‘s community of users. These visual, dynamic maps are used to search for relationships in data, find supporting research, and identify potential collaborators.

The applications are tools within CVB's Cognitive City. The City enables members to find others with shared interests and research and new approaches to solving seemingly unrelated problems. It enables CVB to orchestrate connections and collaborations.

The knowledge map applications can be improved, expanded upon, or customized with the Exaptive Studio.

Networking for Journal Research

Networking for Journal Research

The PubMed Explorer is an augmented way of searching the medical journal database, PubMed®. Finding a cure is hard enough. A more powerful application makes journal research faster and more impactful.

Natural language processing and graph analysis provide more detailed insight into search results and their relationship to each other than normal keyword searching. Data visualizations give users search results from revealing viewpoints. Word clouds provide context to search results. Network diagrams illustrate the journal author network and reveal patterns in the way search terms are being used across publications and papers.

Medical researchers and science writers can locate relevant articles faster and identify key opinion leaders. Their research is placed in context within a body of related research and the research community.

When the application is a tool within a Cognitive City, the community’s work is more powerful, and the metadata from their searches is leveraged to find new, complementary collaborators.

Global Research Community

Getting Answers From a Global Research Community

A non-governmental organization (NGO) wanted to figure out how to use a large amount of data to make better funding decisions around healthcare policy. They wanted to know, from researchers across the globe, which interventions would work best, so that aid would be applied in the most efficient, effective manner. They started with decades of research about every country in the world in the form of a myriad of unique spreadsheets and databases.

Exaptive provided a series of tools to facilitate data exploration and discovery. The applications made machine learning techniques accessible to researchers as end-users. The applications helped analyze country-by-country historical data to identify which ones had similar “fingerprints” based on demographic, economic, environmental, and other factors.

The NGO is using the Cognitive City to help build better research teams and share data based on the insights generated by the applications. It can now make data-driven decisions about how limited resources can do the most good.

The tools and their components can be repurposed and adapted to new contexts with the Exaptive Studio.

Research Network Map Facilitates Serendipitous Connections

The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, a collaboration between Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, is determined to be a “Center without Walls.” Facilitating introductions and collaborations among its many research and clinical practitioners is critical to its mission of enhancing human health, resilience, and quality of life.

Yet finding a way - other than personal networks and serendipity - to connect people who could benefit from each other’s knowledge, experience, research, and data was challenging for the center. There was no easy way for researchers to know who in the network may be pursuing similar ideas or who has already collaborated with whom across the network, or to find clinicians who a specific specialty.

Exaptive built data applications that feature interactive network maps. The networks represent connections between individuals and across institutions in both research and clinical practice related to integrative medicine. It connects people through their publications and to institutions through known affiliations.

The application is deployed on the Osher Center’s website. Researchers and clinicians can quickly search for and find new thought leaders and collaborators. Patients can find clinicians and clinical centers that specialize in their treatment options, and explore areas of research relevant to conditions of interest.
