Removing serendipity, maintaining human values

May 20, 2019 - Exaptive CEO Dave King presented at the Society for Philosophy and Technology’s annual conference, held this year in College Station, Texas, at Texas A&M. Dave presented the topic “Using integrative technology to ensure chance-inspired innovations maintain human values.”

Exaptive has created a virtual environment where teams can collaborate around data. Dave proposed a question to the philosopher crowd: can we use integrative technology not to eliminate chance, but rather to ensure chance-inspired innovations don’t circumvent human mores?

The goal of the Cognitive City platform built by Exaptive is to facilitate innovation. We have found in small experiments that giving a group an artifact about which to find commonalities and differences leads to new understanding in several ways: increased productivity, innovative ideation, and knowledge transfer.

As you would expect from an audience of academics interested greatly in the best and latest in philosophy and technology, they asked some excellent, thought-provoking questions! Dave has been invited based on his presentation to contribute to a submission for a special issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Responsible Innovation. We'll update this post when the official call for papers opens.
