From the Dukes of Burgundy to Saturn V Rocket Fuel: So Many Connections

March 15, 2018 - At the Data + Creativity Meetup, a group of about 20 watched the episode “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry” from the 1978 BBC documentary series Connections.

Connections

We had a great discussion afterward! Some of the things people noticed included the following:

  • How personal connection furthered innovation in the past because people with more/better contacts found buy-in and funding for their ideas.
  • Lots of inventors and visionaries seem to die in poverty.
  • War has played a huge role in innovation.
  • Issues surrounding data and privacy with regard to credit were large concerns when the documentary was made 40 years ago, and seem to be identical to the problems we still face today.

Join us for the next Data + Creativity Meetup on Thursday, April 26, at 6:00pm. We’re going to hear from Laura Ballek, the Chief of Networks with Union Capital Boston (UCB). UCB is helping people improve their own lives and neighborhoods by connecting them to their communities.
